Relay based installations today represent the backbone of most railway signalling assets, therefore there is a need to maintain signalling relay related knowledge. Unfortunately, quite often neither sufficient documentation nor training possibilities are available, so there is a risk about losing know-how over time. UIC Signalling Expert Group (SEG) therefore has published the technical report 'Use of Signalling Relays', which is available in English and German languages, a French version will be available too. The reports can be downloaded at the UIC ETF shop free of charge. The report provides information about more than 100 potential failures and associated risks as well as nearly 100 'elementary' and 'frequently used' measures to eliminate them. The main deliverable is the so called 'impact matrix' which evaluates the impact of measures onto given failures and risks, altogether more than 700 recommendations (from which 500 are functional safety relevant). In addition, the report includes explained wiring diagrams a collection of relay related symbols as well as information how to proceed with quantitative analyses of relay circuits. The technical report 'Use of Signalling Relays' has the potential to maintain signalling relay related knowledge. The structure of the report supports self-study. Knowledge gained from one chapter can be verified by reading another one.
