On the Road to Automated Toll Collection

In search of a solution to the problem of financing highway networks as well as a mechanism for reducing pollution and congestion, the European Union is considering the eventual introduction of an automated road pricing system. Now undergoing extensive testing, electronic toll collection systems offering drive-through speeds as high as 200 kph, appear to be technically feasible. The question is: are they economically and politically supportable?
