Impact of the 2004 North Atlantic Hurricane Season on the Coast of Florida

The state of Florida was impacted by an unprecedented four hurricanes in 2004 between Aug. 13 and Sept. 26 (Figure 1). Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne inflicted severe erosion and damage along most of Florida's beaches fronting on the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. The Florida Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems assessed the storms' damage and erosion conditions and flew aerial photography and videogra-phy of the coast. The Bureau prepared reports of post-storm beach conditions and coastal impact with recommendations for recovery. The Bureau subsequently prepared a hurricane recovery plan for Florida's beaches and dunes. The recovery plan was adopted by a special hurricane session of the Florida Legislature. Restored beaches were observed to better protect coastal properties and development from the hurricanes.
