A Comparison of Bardawil Lagoon and Venice Lagoon

This short note will draw attention to the similarities between Bardawil Lagoon in Egypt and Venice Lagoon in Italy (Figures 1 & 2) and the benefits of a comparative study for enhancing our understanding of coastal lagoons. While lagoons in general have different characteristics even when they are near each other, these two lagoons are to some extent similar. They are approximately the same size, having an area greater than 500 km~2, and are shallow in most parts with a depth less than 1 m. Both lagoons have three inlets, are located along the coast of Mediterranean countries, and have significant economic, ecological, and environmental value. A comparison of the two lagoons would increase our knowledge to be able to enhance these areas. For example, comparing and understanding the physical processes and biological resources of the two lagoons would be helpful for developing successful management plans for both (e.g., birds migrate from Europe to the coast of Egypt during winter season). It is important to note that Venice Lagoon is well-developed, while Bardawil Lagoon is still in pristine condition.
