Combining surfing and shore protection

This dedicated issue of Shore & Beach magazine is focused upon surfing. As cited in its mission statement, ASBPA is dedicated to "preserving, protecting and enhancing ... beaches" and "protecting and improving healthy and diverse recreational opportunities." Surfing is now a popular recreational activity at beaches throughout the world. In 1959, there were only about 5,000 surfers worldwide. In that same year, the movie "Gidget" introduced a surfing culture to mainstream theater audiences with insight into the passion of surfers for waves and beaches. Now, there are on the order of 20 million surfers worldwide.
