Countermeasure research on erosion and protection of the sandy coast, Shandong Province, China

摘要

Shandong is a maritime province of China. Since the 1950s, the sandy coast of Shandong has suffered from increasingly severe erosion. The mean erosion rate is 1~2 m/ yr, reaching upwards of 4.7~6.0 m/yr in localized areas on a short-term basis. Analytical research determined that the main causes for erosion are the severe decrease of terrestrial-source sediment, massive beach sand mining, and the impact of irrational coastal engineering. For years, multiple countermeasures have been taken in order to suppress the coastal erosion: 1) Building large numbers of coastal structures, such as area walls and groins to hold back coastal recession; 2) Beach nourishment with sand replacement for isolated site nourishments; 3) Inhibiting beach face and nearshore sand mining. This paper comprehensively evaluates the effect of the three plans and puts forth several reasonable suggestions for future coastal protection.
