Custom built ships

Van der Giessen-de Noord is a modern shipyard situated over two sites on the river Maas in Krimpen, near the city of Rotterdam. The present company was founded in 1962 by the merging of two shipyards, van der Giessen and De Noord. Today, the yard specialises in the design and construction of custom-built vessels including high speed monohull ferries, cruise ships, conventional ferries, yachts, naval ships and offshore/cable laying vessels. Since 1997, van der Gicssen-de Noord (VdG) has been a part of the IHC Caland group of maritime companies, a Dutch-based holding company working mainly as suppliers to the offshore oil service, dredging and marine industries. VdG has recently completed orders for several European companies including Mont St Michel, the largest ferry ever ordered for the English Channel, for Brittany Ferries; Toisa Proteus, a third offshore support vessel for Toisa/Seakion; and Pascal Paoli, a new fast ferry for SNCM (see page 9).
