After six operational deployments in as many years, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has entered dry dock at Toulon for her first major overhaul. The nuclear-powered vessel will undergo refuelling and upgrade work to her flight deck and communications systems. Her troublesome propellers will be replaced with a new design courtesy of Rolls Royce USA. The new blades will allow the ship to reliably maintain her maximum speed of 27 knots, which is critical for the safe operation of catapult-launched aircraft. The change is all the more important with the heavier Rafale F3 aircraft and the new ASMP-A nuclear missile soon to enter service.
