The first of the companies set up to carry the Royal Mails to far-flung parts of the Empire was the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. By the 1920s, this had become the largest shipping company in the UK, owning a diverse group of companies and trading to almost every continent. Campbell McCutcheon tells the story of the company from the 1830s to its eventual demise under Furness Withy ownership.
