The annual kiel Week naval gathering took place in June with a wide selection of ships visiting the German port. The German host ship was the multi-purpose frigate Bayern, which arrived on 19 June. The same day the Greek submarine Papanikolis, still not accepted by the Greek navy, was on trials from builders HDW in the Baltic. Most other naval ships arrived on 20 June and included the US Navy's cruiser Gettysburg and destroyer Cole; the Royal Navy's assault ship HMS Bulwark, which was paying her first visit to Kiel; the Russian frigate Neustrashimy; the Danish corvettes Olfert Fischer and Viben; and the naval home guard ships Speditoren and Budstikken, with sailing ships Svanen and Thyra arriving the next day. The French depot ship Loire and minehunters Croix du Sud and Eridan also arrived on 20 June. The biggest contingent was sent by the Dutch Navy with Mercuur, van Kingsbergen and minehunters Maasluis, Vlaardingen, Makkun and Willemstad all in attendance.
