The 5,500TEU container ship Cosco Busan (pictured below with the gash in her hull) hit the Bay Bridge connecting Oakland with San Francisco in dense fog on the morning of 7 November 2007 while outbound from the Port Of Oakland. The collision, which took place with a San Francisco pilot on board, left a 160ft gash on the ship's side, about 10ft above the waterline, and resulted in a spill of over 58,000 gallons of fuel oil. The impact did not damage the bridge, which is protected by a heavy fendering system, but hull repairs to the boxship are expected to take several weeks.
