HEAVY LIFTERS

Following a mishap in 1909, when a heavy boiler being delivered to the Malabar coast of India fell into the water, Clan Line fitted many of its new ships with cargo gear suitable for handling heavy items. Five of the 11 ships built between 1911 and 1913 had a 30- or 40-ton derrick on the foremast.
