The port of Ipswich stands at the head of the navigation of the river Orwell, and as a settlement was founded sometime around the sixth century. The port's current facilities consist of a wet dock, built originally in the Victorian era, and riverside wharves at Cliff Quay and West Bank. Today the wet dock mainly serves as a marina for private yachts, although timber imports are handled at the single berth remaining in commercial use.
