I went to sea in 1974 with Blue Star Line on board their vessel Halifax, leaving on 24 December from Charleston, South Caroline. She went to Ecuador carrying paper, and we took bananas back to the United States on my first trip, which lasted five months.rnWith Blue Star, I was mainly on refrigerated vessels. While with Starman Shipping, I served on heavy-lift ships which could carry huge 1,000-ton cargoes that were rolled onto the ship. One unusual delivery involved landing a huge oil pipeline rolled straight onto the beach in Tierra del Fuego after we had deliberately put the vessel aground. I worked for 12 years with Blue Star, and was also with their subsidiaries Lamport & Holt and Booth Line.
