摘要

With their names taken from Scottish nobles, the ships of Hugh Hogarth and Sons Ltd could be regarded as aristocrats amongst tramp steamers, especially the elegant vessels of the 1950s. However, those who manned them may have had other opinions, as the 'HH' on the house flag was said to stand for 'Hungry Hogarths' due to the fact that the crew's rations were so meagre.rnShipowners are generally said to come 'from the wheel house or the counting house', depending whether they were originally seafarers or began in business on shore. Founder Hugh Hogarth (1840-1904) was firmly of the latter persuasion, although somewhat unusual in that he began as arnship chandler. Such men often invested in locally-owned ships, a small packet of shares ensuring that the ship's owner became obliged to buy all his stores from the investor.
