Instantly recognisable, classic Dutch coasters were built in large numbers, especially in the 1950s. Roy Fenton takes an affectionate look at the design of the coaster, how it developed and what happened to it.rnAnyone who knew the European shipping scene in the 1950s and 1960s will remember the classic Dutch coaster. Typically it measured just under 500 tons, had an economical diesel engine, a small crew and a shallow draught that allowed it to use even the smallest ports. With its typical grey hull it was a highly distinctive little ship, instantly recognisable even though there were several variants of the design. The Dutch coaster flourished thanks to particular commercial and social factors in these decades, but changing times led to the demise of the classic designs, although the Dutch are still a force to be reckoned with in coastal shipping.
