In november 1969 the last remaining whaleback ran aground near Marquette on Lake Michigan, damaging her hull enough to require a complete overhaul before she could resume service. Her owners, Cleveland Tankers, decided that repairing the 73-year-old vessel was uneconomic and she was laid up. But 40 years later Meteor is still very much in existence as a museum ship on Barkers Island in Superior, although funding is desperately needed to ensure her continued survival.
