Encouraged by a steady emigrant trade from Scandinavia and the Baltic to the United States, and out of a sense of national pride, Swede Gunnar Carlsson and shipowner Dan Brostrom founded the Rederiaktiebolaget Sverige-Nordamerika on 4 December 1914, and the following September acquired the 1900-built Potsdam from Holland America Line. As Stockholm, she inaugurated what was popularly known as Swedish American Line's Gothenburg-New York service on 11 December 1915.
