The 1976-built lyubov Orlova (4,251grt) was detained at the end of September in Canada because the ship's owner owed more than $251,000 to the Canadian company that chartered her. Lyubov Orlova, with 49 Russian and two Ukrainian crew members on board but no passengers, was seized following a suit by a haulage contractor over a debt. Canadian officials placed the ship, used during the summer for adventure tourism trips to northern Labrador, under arrest when she arrived at St John's, Newfoundland. Crew members said they had not been paid for five months and are owed about $300,000 in wages. The Russian Ambassador to Canada, Georgy Mamedov, was working to secure the crew members' release.
