South Africa's research ship

STX Finland has been contracted by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs to build a 134m polar supply and research vessel to serve the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP). The ice-strengthened vessel is to be built at STX Finland's Rauma yard for delivery in 2012, and will cost €116 million. It will have berths for a crew of 45 and 100 researchers, and will be capable of functioning as a supply carrier, research ship or icebreaker.
