The regular service between Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santos, Rio de Janeiro and New York begun in the late 19th century proved such an unqualified success that larger ships were needed. In 1906 the first of a series which was to include Lamport and Holt's largest and finest passenger carriers emerged, with Veronese delivered by Workman, Clark & Co of Belfast and Velasquez from Sir Raylton, Dixon & Co at Middlesbrough.
