Steam was late in capturing the trade to New Zealand, as the distances were so great that sail remained largely unchallenged until 1883. In that year the recently-formed New Zealand Shipping Co Ltd took delivery of its first ships, having previously used chartered steamers. This forced its older rival, Shaw, Savill, to order steamers to supplement its large fleet of sailing ships.
