Hugh Hogarth of Ardrossan first operated steamships after moving to Glasgow in 1881, Hogarth's sons entered the business in 1901, and the carefully managed firm built up a large fleet of steamships, a legacy of which was a series of traditional motorships built at British yards in the late 1950s. Ralph Chapman of Newcastle, who had entered shipowning in 1878, operating as R. Chapman & Son from 1896 until becoming Chapman & Willan Ltd, had before the war taken delivery of several new ships from Short Bros of Sunderland, builder of a large number of tramp ships incorporating a split superstructure. This feature was effectively repeated in a series of seven ships built between 1957 and 1960 as Lynton, Crainton, Scorton, Amberton, Norton, Clearton and Brighton.
