Carnival Corporation, parent company of Cunard Line, has won a US$24 million judgement against Rolls Royce in connection with a faulty Mermaid-podded propulsion system fitted on Queen Mary 2 (1983/148,528gt). The legal action in the United States began nearly three years ago and, following a two-week jury trial, Carnival was awarded US$16 million in damages for eight counts of fraud and US$8 million for breach of repair warranties after demonstrating that bearings had to be replaced on four of QM2's pods between 2003 and 2008.
