The Essex class survivors

Uss yorktown was donated to the Patriot's Point Development Authority in Charleston, South Carolina in 1974. She was opened to the public as a memorial to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States Navy on 13 October 1975. Yorktown is moored alongside the submarine USS Clamagore, the destroyer USS Laffey and the Coast Guard cutter USCG Ingham. Her future, however, is in some doubt, as visitor numbers have declined while costs have risen. The US Navy, which still owns the ship, have asked the operators to properly maintain the ship or return her to US Navy stewardship, although the cost of disposing of the ship could be greater than repairing her.
