Britain's first submarines

Wednesday 2 October 1901 dawned cold but clear at Barrow-in- Furness, home of the great shipbuilder Vickers, Sons and Maxim Ltd. That day the yard launched a new kind of vessel, the event a low-key one since only a few senior Royal Navy officers knew the craft existed. Trials were intensive but went well, and eventually the vessel sailed to Portsmouth. By then two more examples had been built, and Britain's first submarines, the Holland class, were about to enter service.
