The captain of Titanic, Edward John Smith, was one of those who lost their lives when the ship sank, and he has become one of the most famous ship captains ever as a result of his ship's subseduent fame.rnBorn on 27 January 1850, Captain Smith was from Hanley in Staffordshire and first went to sea aged 17. He joined the White Star Line in March 1880 as Fourth Officer of Celtic. He served aboard the company's liners operating to Australia and to New York. In 1887 he gained his first White Star command, RepublicrnThe small city of Lichfield was chosen as the best place for a statue to be erected in his honour. The bronze statue was unveiled in 1914, having been sculpted by Lady Kathleen Scott, widow of Scott of the Antarctic.
