White Star Line remembered

The WhiternStar Line was registered by Thomas Ismay in 1869 as the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, the name and flag having been purchased from a defunct Australian sailing packet company. The company's first order for ships, placed with Harland & Wolff in Belfast, established the long-lasting relationship between the two companies.rnWhite Star's Transatlantic services commenced in 1871 and, initially, the vessels captured Atlantic speed records but, in 1897, 'comfort and size over speed' became company policy. Thomas Ismay died in 1899 and was succeeded by his son J. Bruce Ismay.
