Following two separate faults in one of her Rolls Royce Mermaid pods, Celebrity Millennium was taken out of service on 21 August at Ketchikan, Alaska, terminating both her current cruise and her Alaska season. Although the first problem had already been resolved, it was felt that in the light of the further failure that the pod should be replaced. The ship headed directly for the Grand Bahama Shipyard at Freeport, where a replacement unit was expected to arrive on 3 September, about four days before the ship. The job of replacing the pod is thought to be relatively straightforward, taking just a few days while the ship is in dry dock. Celebrity Cruises were confident that the ship would back in service in time for her 22 September departure from San Diego.
