Bahri, formerly The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia, is taking delivery of the first of six 26,000dwt Con-Ro vessels it is having built by South Korea's Hyundai MIPO shipyard. The vessels are smaller and lighter than the ships they are replacing and will consume 45 per cent less fuel. Designed by Denmark's Knud E, Hansen, they are being outfitted with 250-tonne capacity stern ramps and two heavy-lift jib cranes forward, the latter having a lift capacity of 250 tonnes. Each vessel will offer 24,000m~2 of ro-ro space and accommodate up to 364TEU. The first ship, Bahri Abha, entered service in February and the second, Bahri Hofuf, in May. They will be followed by the remaining vessels before mid-2014, Two of the ships being replaced, the 42,600dwt Saudi Abha and Saudi Diriyah, both completed in 1983, have already been sold to breakers, and the remaining two will go before the end of the year.
