One of New York's most famous fireboats has been purchased from the city by a group of enthusiasts who plan to restore her as a floating museum. Firefighter arrived at her new home in Greenport Harbor on 10 February, and volunteers immediately started work to return her to her former glory. The 134ft vessel was built by United Shipyards on Staten Island in 1938 and was capable of pumping 20,000 gallons of water per minute. During her career she was involved in fighting several major ship fires in New York, including those aboard USS Lafayette, formerly the French liner Normandie, in 1942, and the tanker Esso Brussels and container ship Sea Witch in 1973.
