Winston Churchill said that the U-boat peril was the only thing that ever really frightened him during World War II. His concern was well-founded because, during March 1943, despite German forces being close to surrender in North Africa following the Operation Torch landings the previous November and the Eighth Army's advance from El Alamein, Allied shipping losses were greater than those of any previous month.
