The seeds for P&O operations in Australia were sown as early as 1844, when people in the then British colony sought a steamship service which would reduce the journey time to the new continent. There were many false starts, but in 1852 P&O's first iron-screw steamship, the 750-ton Chusan, sailed to Sydney, connecting Australia with Singapore and the UK.
