Cable layers are taking on a far different profile from that of their predecessors as the laying of electrical cables for wind farm installations rather than communications cables becomes their primary employment. Such is Siem Offshore's $85 million Siem Aimery, being completed by Poland's Remontowa Shipbuilding. Because wave-related operability issues have been a major factor in delaying cable lay operations, the newbuild features a hull design that is intended to permit operations in wave heights up to 3m using a diesel-electric propulsion system that will provide power to two azimuth propulsion thrusters, two tunnel thrusters and one retractable thruster.
