Between the buoys in the Fal

Four miles upriver from Falmouth, where the open expanse of water known as Carrick Roads narrows into the river Fal, the ship moorings begin. Under the jurisdiction of the Port of Truro, the berths in the river Fal may not be as busy as they once were, but they still attract a wide variety of vessels. Even as late as the 1960s, ships could still be seen in three stretches of the river Fal, from Turnware Bar at the mouth of the Fal, with moorings also in the Truro River. This was known locally as 'Hain's reach' on account of it being used by the St Ives-based owner Hain's Steamship Co.
