The Alaska Marine Highway System was founded in 1948 by three men who had a dream to provide dependable marine transportation between Alaska's coastal communities. Haines residents Steve Homer and Ray and Gustav Gelotte set up a company named Chilkoot Motorship Lines and purchased Chilkoot, an ex-US Navy landing craft. Chilkoot, 121ft by 33ft, drawing 3.5ft when loaded, could carry a maximum of 14 cars, as well as passengers in accommodation that was very poor due to its Navy configuration.
