Angelo Ravano, who was born in 1919 at Lavagna, south of Genoa in Italy, moved to Lugano in Switzerland in 1957, participated in the creation of Overland Trust Bank and launched Contship Container Line in 1969. Contship went on to become a major player in the container ship business before being taken over by CP Ships as part of the industry's rationalisation. Contship has a long pedigree, dating back to the 19th century, the Ravano family's shipowning activity starting in about 1860. Angelo's grandfather, also named Angelo (1838-1925), together with his brother, ordered a barque from the shipyard of Bernardu Borzone at Lavagna, which was, at that time, a centre for the building of sailing ships. As the two brothers had the nickname Bismarck, they chose that name for their first sailing ship. On marrying one of the shipbuilder's daughters, Rosetta, Angelo Ravano set up home in Lavagna.
