On 23 August, in a low-key statement, Britain's Ministry of Defence announced that the decommissioned aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious had been sold to a Turkish shipbreaking company for scrap. She is expected to follow the final voyage already taken by her two sisterships, Invincible and Ark Royal, to the LEYAL Ship Recycling Group's facility, near Aliaga on the Aegean coast, before the year's end. Her passing will mark the end of a class of warship that dominated Royal Navy operations for much of the past 30 years and which earned an important place in British naval history.
