Oslo Maritime history unleashed

The city of Oslo lies at the head of Oslofjord and is around 60 miles north of the islands of Tjome and Vesteroy. It has been the capital of Norway for more than 700 years, but for much of that time was named Christiania/ Kristiania and only reverted to its original name of Oslo as recently as 1925. It is now a thriving port, one where modern vessels mingle with historic craft of all shapes and sizes. Below the impressive Akershus Fortress in the harbour are the passenger/ cargo steamer Boroysund and the steam tug Styrbjoern, both operated by the Norsk Veteranskibsklub. B0r0ysund dates from 1908 and was built by Trondheims mek Verksted as the combined passenger/ cargo vessel and tug Odin for Trondheims Lxgtercompagni. She was requisitioned for use as a naval guardship during World War I before being sold in 1923 and renamed Skjergar for service out of Bergen, but two years later her towing gear was removed, she was renamed Boroysund, and employed in the Lofoten islands.
