HOW DID YOU PROGRESS TO MASTER? I joined the merchant navy in 1972 when I was 15 as a trainee on an Icelandic Coastguard vessel. From there I worked on a passenger ship, a coastal tanker and different general cargo ships. I joined Icelandic State shipping in 1979 and worked on general cargo and ro-ro vessels as deck officer. I moved to pallet carriers, mostly circumnavigating Iceland, serving 38 ports of call every week, and in 1984, at the age of 27, I became a captain. In 1991 I took up my present role as Principal of the training centre, which includes command of Sæbjoerg and originally involved the previous Sæbjoerg, the former coastguard vessel Por.
