SHIPBREAKING IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE

There is little shipbreaking in the western hemisphere outside the yards at Brownsville, Texas, which have something of a monopoly on demolishing vessels owned by the US government because of federal regulations. In recent years these facilities have been busy with five large aircraft carriers, Forestal, Saratoga, Ranger, Constellation and Independence, each of which generates about 60,000 tons of steel.
