USS LONG BEACH THE LAST CRUISER

USS Long Beach was the world's first nuclear-powered surface warship and the first designed from the keel up to have a main armament of guided missiles. Although she was not the first warship to go into service armed with guided missiles, her predecessors hail all been conversions. From 1955 a total of 11 heavy cruisers of the Baltimore, Oregon City and Cleveland classes were fitted with combinations of the short range Terrier, the long range Talos and the newer Tartar system. These conversions were expensive and there were limits as to how tar what were essentially World Wai Ⅱ designs could be adapted to new technology.
