When SW&S last covered ballast water treatment systems (October 2006, pp 14-19), the outcome of the 55th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC55) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was eagerly awaited.rnSuch systems must meet the ballast water performance standard required under regulation D-2 of the International Convention for the Control and Monitoring of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention), in accordance with the stipulated testing protocol (Convention Guidelines G8, and G9 where active substances are involved).
