The first of the two ropax newbuilds delivered to P&O Ferries in January, is not only the largest ferry to operate on the cross-Channel route but also the very first ferry designed to comply with SOLAS Safe Return to Port requirements. The design is 'future proofed' for up and coming legislation, incorporates a new car deck concept, and has a unique hull form that is claimed to reduce drag in shallow waters, slashing operational costs significantly. In fact her whole raison d'etre is to have the same operating costs, fuel consumption and turn-round times as the much smaller vessel she replaces, the Pride of Dover. Spirit of Britain is a very significant ship indeed.
