At the start of 2017, the world shipping industry as a whole has not yet recovered from the aftermath of the 2009 recession. The shipping industry still suffers from overcapacity and freight and charter rates in the liner and bulks shipping markets remain at depressed levels. In 2016, deliveries to the merchant fleet reached 98 million dwt. Since 2014, global fleet deliveries have slowed but for some sectors, even this minimal growth may have been too much. The slowdown in deliveries to some extent reflects the fact that less and less ships have been ordered in the post-crisis years with finance and cashflow tightening (although that does not hold true for 2015 tanker markets).
