Even before the Coronavirus outbreak, global shipbuilding capacities were not fully utilized. The shipbuilding market has been suffering from a lack of orders for years. Global output of merchant ships has shrunk by 40 percent since the peak in 2011. At present (mid-2020), the volume of orders is only slightly more than a third of the volume that the shipyards still had in their order books at the beginning of 2008. Since then, the number of shipyards has also been reduced considerably through closures and mergers.
