The ISL "total passenger" fleet (ships of 300 gt and over) contains different segments such as cruise ships, pure passenger ships/ferries, ro-pax units (car ferries) and conventional cargo/passenger ships. Table 1 indicates the composition of the total passenger fleet at the start of 2021. Besides 2,138 "pure" cruise/passenger vessels, this fleet segment also comprises more than 3,000 passenger/ro-ro cargo ships (including ro-pax car ferries and conventional passenger/ cargo ships). In terms of tonnage, the ocean going cruise vessels accounted for more than half of the gt capacity, whereas by number, ro-pax/car ferries (54%) and pure passenger ferries (32%) dominate.
