A three-dimensional Rankine panel method is described for calculating the hydrodynamic lateral force and yaw moment acting on a ship at small drift angles in shallow water. The boundary-value problem for the free-surface flow is linearized about the nonlinear solution of the symmetric flow due to the longitudinal motion of the ship. The circulation is introduced into the flow field by using a semi-infinite dipole/vortex sheet on the centerplane of the ship and imposing the Kutta condition along the trailing edge of the hull. The shallow water effects are taken into account by the method of images. Numerical results are presented for a Wigley hull and a Mariner type ship.
