In its report on the shipping year the German Shipowners' Association (VDR) states that 2006 has been an extremely successful one for international shipowners, with high growth rates and German owners participating disproportionately. Despite strong growth in freight volumes, some charter rates for containerships nevertheless declined steeply, while conditions for other ship types remained stable and indeed tended to climb in most cases. According to forecasts by the Global market research company quoted by VDR, growth in worldwide container transport will remain at a high level.
