Decca, a radio navigation aid well known to mariners, 'died' on 31 March 2000 (albeit with a rearguard action from Japan). At that point, funding previously provided by UK's General Lighthouse Authority (GLA) to the Racal Group to maintain and operate the 'chains' of Decca radio transmitting stations was terminated. Satellite-based navigation, notably GPS and its derivatives, had superseded Decca - though another hyperbolic radio aid - LORAN - lives on.
